Four reasons to grow organically: organic is healthier for us (we eatthe food we grow), healthier for you, and healthier for the land. The last reason that we are organic is because we can be; because we can, we feel we should.
Some farmers say they can’t afford to be organic because the yield is too low and they can’t compete with food arriving from other coutries. The yield certainly is often lower but the quality and the safety of the product is very high. As producers we need to be imaginative about getting our products to market and getting our message about right price for real food across. We also need to diversify our activities to not only survive but thrive but be responsive to what the consumer is really looking for.
And consumers need to be conscious about the “real cost” of cheaper imported food and make intelligent choices about how to spend their dollars.
